Banning mobile phones in school (FINAL VERSION)

Banning mobile phones in school has become a much discussed issue today. In fact, lots of students have been forbidden to carry their mobile phones to class. This can have positive or negative effects. Let's see different ways of looking at it.

One of the strongest arguments for banning mobile phones in school is students' distraction. Even if the mobile phone is on silent mode, many students spend all the time wondering if someone called or messaged. If so, the teacher is not being listened to at all. On the other hand, mobile phones are considered a cheating tool, so whenever students are doing an exam using mobile phones, they won't be learning, but deceiving themselves. Moreover, some argue the ban is necessary to face "happy slapping", which is a form of bullying that consists of filming the attack using, for instance, a mobile camera phone.

Opponents of banning mobile phones in school claim that it is important to have them with you all the time, even in school, because it may be useful if an accident occurred. It would be quite difficult to find help easily without making a quick call using a mobile phone. It's also claimed that mobile phones can be a great educational tool instead of a threat. Finally, many people state that banning mobile phones doesn't make sense since students usually ignore rules and keep doing the same.

Taking everything into account, it's true that many students use their mobile phones in order to cheat in the exams, and a lot of them get easily distracted, but I think it's no use banning them as a student has to be able to decide on his/her own whether he/she wants to succeed honestly or not.
