PIRACY

There is a controversy about whether piracy is ethical or unethical. It’s a fact that free downloads from the Internet are damaging the music industry (and more industries) and sales are falling seriously.

In my opinion, piracy is not wrong at all, because it’s been caused by a rise in prices and a devaluation of the music quality (a massive emergence of “new stars”). Moreover, downloads are a good way to become famous and, afterwards, earn money with concerts and other events. Nowadays, CD sales are not as important as they were in the past; it’s more important to be relevant on social networks and on media’s conferences. Actually, piracy isn’t harming the music industry at all, it’s a good way for a whole lot of groups to become known and it’s making national music expand throughout the world. What’s more, if people are able to have access to piracy it is because music industry and other industries related to piracy are not as affected as they seem to be. In fact, there are many bands that are showing their songs in the net in order to get a lot of visits and obtain popularity (people who go to their concerts, one of the most important sources of money).

To sum up, piracy can seem a great damage to music industry; but, in the new globalized world, it can be a helpful tool to be successful.

  1. You're right, there's more and more comercial music nowadays (where's the real good music?). Music industries and governements seem to be reacting to piracy now, but I think they should look for other ways rather than eliminating our sources of culture... Don't you think so?
